A dog-loss grief book by George Dewiliby

For the day you lost your dog—and the whole life that day cannot contain.

Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us begins where many people feel most alone: the final appointment, leaving without the dog who arrived with you, the silence at home, and the question that keeps returning—Did I do the right thing?

It does not leave the reader inside the goodbye. Through 25 dogs and 25 families, reflective passages, and the story of George’s yellow Labrador, Wilson, the book helps the rest of the relationship become audible again.

A gift from Carie Hobbs

The Golden Heart of Wilson

“Wilson regulated me while he was here. After we had to let him go, my heart shattered into a million pieces. I listen to this song almost every day. In its own way, it has become part of how I carry him.”

Carie came to know my story from afar—through what I shared on a screen, through the books taking shape, and through the memories of Wilson that kept finding their way into the work. She gathered what she had seen and gave me this song.

The words meant more to me than she could have known. I began listening almost every day. In many ways, it became a kind of therapy—the way an Author Reflection can return the meaning held inside the details of a life. I made this video so others could see Wilson, understand the love behind The Light I Had to Fight For and Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us, and meet the dog whose life still runs through every page.

With gratitude to Carie Hobbs, one of the contributors to Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us, and to Bella Boo.

The goodbye is not the whole story

Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us

Shaped in part by conversations with more than twenty veterinary clinics, this book enters the part of loss that begins before goodbye and follows families home: the drive in, leaving without the dog who arrived with you, the silence afterward, and the question, ‘Did I do the right thing?’ Twenty-five families' stories, reflective interludes, and Wilson's story help readers remember the whole life they shared.

Drawing on nearly three decades in cardiac catheterization laboratories, George writes about patients remembered, losses carried, and the distance between appearing capable and feeling like yourself. Written for healthcare workers, their loved ones, and anyone who recognizes burnout, emotional exhaustion, or the cost of carrying too much for too long.

Author Reflection

Your story.
Personally understood.

A book may help you recognize yourself somewhere in its pages. An Author Reflection is written because of your story.

You share the memories, ordinary details, one meaningful photograph, and the part of the story you may still be trying to understand. George spends time with what you provide, looks for the connections that can be difficult to see while living inside the story, and writes back what he sees.

A new book by George Dewiliby

The Life Nobody Sees

The Hidden Experiences That Shape Who We Become

How much of a human life can happen without ever becoming visible?

A capable person can still need help. Two people can share a home and experience the same day differently. An ordinary moment can shape a life without ever becoming a memory anyone knows how to tell.

Through personal stories and reflective essays, George explores responsibility, anxiety, relationships, forgiveness, grief, and the futures we once imagined. He also turns toward private joy, curiosity, and the wonder familiarity can hide.

The Life Nobody Sees invites us to look again at ourselves, at the people beside us, and at the meaning already present in lives that never needed an audience to matter.

Coming soonPaperback, hardback, and e-book editions will be available after publication.

The Light I Had to Fight For

What happens when the person everyone depends on begins disappearing inside the life they built?

For nearly three decades, George worked in cardiac catheterization laboratories, where being capable was not a personality trait. It was what other people needed from him.

The Light I Had to Fight For looks beneath that capability: at the patients who remain in memory, the losses carried home, the strain a family absorbs, and the distance that can grow between appearing strong and still feeling like yourself.

This is not only a book about healthcare. It is for the people who kept showing up—for work, for family, and for everyone who counted on them—until they had to ask what part of themselves was still waiting on the other side of all that responsibility.

I cried reading this. You always put words to how I felt about my Charlie. I joined an online pet-loss grief group, and I've shared your book, your understanding and your kindness with them all. I also share it with my Facebook grief group when I notice someone is overwhelmed with their pain. It has helped me many times, and I know it will help others too. I've even recommended it to cat people, because losing an animal you love—cat, dog or horse—is still loss. I just wish everyone grieving this type of loss could find your book. It has pulled me out of many dark days.

Charlie was my once-in-a-lifetime dog, and I will miss her for the rest of my days on this earth. Thank you for writing your book and helping me find my way through understanding this loss. I hope somewhere up there Charlie and Wilson have met.

‘Love remembers before thought does.’ It took me a long time to read this. I would read, stop, cry and continue. That is why your book matters so much to me. You understand how great the loss is because you are living it. I still have so many feelings I've yet to put into words or even sort out.

I will forever be grateful to have found your book. It helped me not feel so alone in my sadness. It helped explain why I still have this awful ache deep in my soul. Charlie will always be a part of who I am because of the love we shared and the things she taught me. There is comfort in knowing that. Thank you for helping me have a better understanding of exactly what I lost. I know I would do it all again, even knowing how it would end.

His name is George Dewiliby, his boy was called Wilson, and between the two of them they have made this heartbreaking time a little more bearable. For those who need it now, it is truly heartfelt and warming; for those who may need it in the future, it will be there waiting for you.

I don't know how I came across you on Facebook. I am only so thankful that I did, and that because of you and your words, things become a little easier to understand, good memories come back, and your words carry so much healing.

Wilson may not be present in this actual life, but he is always present in you, how you write and how you help people. Wilson's legacy and your writing continue to help so many people around the world, and for that I thank you both from the bottom of mine and Gizmo's hearts.

Did I like Learning to Heal Through the Dogs That Loved Us? I like to think reading a book 5 times and parts of it more than that in the first three or four months since publication would indicate that rather than my lack of ability to absorb prose.

While I only knew one doggie personally, very personally, each one I now feel like I knew, especially Wilson, whose perspective from where he is up there with Hazel makes him even closer. That was brilliant, George.

As I told you, the book is always on my nightstand, where some people keep their Bibles.

Pierce and I continue to talk about the book to everyone we know who loves doggies, which is most of the people we want to know. No one has read your inscriptions to us and had a dry eye. The reports from those we have either gifted the book to and those who have ordered directly from you have been unanimous in their respect for your having written a book not like any other.

George, you probably do not know that I have a three-generation (including my additions to it) collection of First Editions. Whether Dickens or Dumas or Joyce or Steinbeck or Clemens, I can tell you that there is no book in my library (or nightstand) that means more to me than yours. Thank you for writing it.

I carry this book with me throughout my day. Having lost my White Knight in Shining Armor on June 3, 2026, I have been able to find comfort in some parts. On page 50, ‘the world was not where Ranger lived. You were.’ I can honestly say now that I believe that I was Eli's world. And that is completely comforting because he was/is my world. I highly recommend this book if you have lost a very important pet.

A letter to veterinary leadershipRead letter

FOR VETERINARY LEADERSHIP

Dear Doctor, Practice Manager, and Veterinary Leadership Team,

When a family leaves your practice without the dog who came in with them, they take your care with them. The patience you offered, the questions you answered, and the dignity you gave their dog matter. At home, though, they may encounter questions they could not have asked in the room: How do I live without him? Why can’t I move the leash? Did I do the right thing?

I wrote Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us for that part of the experience. I have worked in cardiac catheterization laboratories since 1997, caring for patients and families through fear, uncertainty, and loss. Yet when my family had to say goodbye to our Labrador, Wilson, I found myself trying to understand grief from a different place. Our veterinary team gave him compassion and a peaceful ending. The paw prints, nose prints, and keepsakes mattered to us. So did the care we received. I still needed help finding my way through the days that followed.

As I developed the book, I visited more than twenty veterinary clinics throughout western Colorado and spoke with veterinarians, technicians, reception staff, and clinic leaders. I asked what they would want a book to address for grieving families. Those conversations helped shape its opening material: the drive to the appointment, the moment of leaving without the dog, the ride home, and the guilt and second-guessing that can follow a decision made with love.

The book then makes room for twenty-five families’ stories, reflective interludes, and Wilson’s story, with “Wilson Speaks” bringing it to a close. Together, these pages return attention to the whole relationship: the routines, personalities, shared years, and ordinary moments that made each dog part of a family. The final day can become so overwhelming that it obscures those years. My hope is to help readers remember more of the life they shared while giving them room to grieve its ending.

Veterinary teams have helped me understand how the book might fit into their care. At San Juan Veterinary Clinic in Montrose, staff members read it and later requested additional Comfort Cards. Other practices have chosen to keep books available for families. Each team knows its community and can decide whether either resource is useful, and when offering it would feel appropriate.

Ways to offer these resources

Comfort Cards are available to veterinary practices at no cost. A card can accompany aftercare materials or memorial items, sit at reception, or be offered quietly to a family. Its website address and QR code let people explore the book privately, whenever they feel ready. Your team does not need to stock books, explain them in detail, or ask anyone to make a purchase during a difficult appointment. Practices using the cards can contact me for replenishment.

Books can also be kept in the practice to give to families after a loss or make available in another way that suits your team. If you are interested in carrying copies, please tell me your anticipated quantity and how you would like to use them. I will confirm pricing, availability, and shipping before any order is placed. You are welcome to offer cards, books, or both.

Review a copy before deciding

I welcome requests for a complimentary review copy so veterinary professionals can read the book before deciding whether to offer it to families. Please include your name and role, practice name, website or public practice listing, clinic phone number, practice email, and mailing address. I review each request, verify the practice through independently published contact information, and confirm approval before arranging shipment to the verified clinic address. Mobile practices and other special arrangements are considered individually; submitting a request does not guarantee a complimentary copy.

The book and Comfort Card are intended to complement the care your team already provides. They do not replace veterinary guidance, grief counseling, memorial services, or other support a family may need. They offer something people can return to in their own time, when the appointment is over and they are learning what daily life will be without their dog.

Thank you for considering these resources, and for the care you give families during moments they will remember for the rest of their lives. If you would like to read the book, request cards, or discuss copies for your practice, I would be glad to hear from you.

With gratitude,

George Dewiliby Author, Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us GeorgeDewiliby.com GeorgeDWrites@gmail.com 904-738-3856

A letter to veterinary teamsRead letter

FOR VETERINARY TEAMS

There is a part of this experience that does not end when your client leaves the room.

You help families make some of the most compassionate and difficult decisions they will ever have to make. You make sure their animal does not suffer, and you carry that moment with care, professionalism, and humanity. But what follows—the walk to the car, the silence at home, the routines that suddenly feel different, and the questions that begin to surface—is something most people are not prepared for, and it is a part of the journey you cannot physically go with them into.

Learning to Heal Through the Dogs Who Loved Us was written for that space. It is not intended to replace the care you provide or to tell someone how they should grieve. It is designed to meet people inside what they are already experiencing in the hours, days, and weeks after a loss, helping them feel less alone, work through questions such as “Did I do the right thing?”, separate love from guilt, and begin to understand why the loss can affect them so deeply.

WHEN TO OFFER THIS

After euthanasia

After an unexpected loss

When a client is struggling to leave

When you sense that words in the moment are simply not enough

HOW TO OFFER IT

There is no script required. A simple, “We were given this and thought it might help,” is enough.

The Comfort Card allows your team to offer that support without needing to stock or hand out a physical copy of the book. It gives families a private way to learn about the resource later, when they are ready and on their own timeline. Some practices use only the Comfort Cards. Others keep copies of the book available as well. Some use both.

This is not meant to replace what you already do. It is simply another way to extend that care into the part of the journey that begins after the family leaves you.

— George Dewiliby
